Meet the TrainersKaren Walker
Karen Walker is a classroom teacher with Brunswick County schools. She is an energetic and enthusiastic teacher and trainer. The energy with which she presents is fueled by her desire to impact the young people of our state. "I want to see them live life to its fullest and that can only be accomplished with a skills-approach to health education." She finds that the use of alternative assessment helps to meet the diverse needs of her students. Karen received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Appalachian State University, focusing on adolescent development. Not only does she feel kids need a comprehensive health background, she states, "They also deserve it. Health Education is the most important subject we teach. It encompasses the whole child. If our students are happy and healthy, everything else will fall into place." She has been a writer for both of the "Successfully Teaching Middle
School Health" manuals. She has trained in HIV prevention, Family
Life Education, Assessing Health Literacy and Substance Abuse and has
been a writer for the test item bank.
