Services Provided to North Carolina Schools

The School Health Training Center offers workshops for teachers and other school personnel in the skills-based North Carolina Course of Study in Healthful Living Education. School systems may request training in other related areas such as the coordinated school health program and skills for school health advisory committees. Some workshops must be offered on a for-fee basis.

Safe and Drug-free Schools Funding can be used to support:
  • Violence Prevention Education
  • Life Skills Training -- an evidence-based curriculum that reduces use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and inhalants
  • Project TNT (Towards No Tobacco) -- an evidence-based curriculum that reduces the use of cigarettes and spit tobacco

Abstinence Until Marriage funding can be used to support:

  • Making a Difference - a science-based curriculum that promotes abstinence to reduce HIV, STDs, and pregnancy for middle grades
  • Preventing HIV/AIDS (middle school and high school)
  • Abstinence and Puberty Education (for teachers, counselors & nurses of grades 4-6)
  • Baby Think It Over -- a teen pregnancy prevention program (middle school and high school)
  • Real Care Baby Think It Over
Additional workshops in comprehensive school health education:
  • Successfully Teaching Middle School Health II (for Healthful Living Teachers grades 6-8)
  • Successfully Teaching High School Health (for Healthful Living teachers grades 9-12)
  • Assessing Health Literacy (student assessment in Healthful Living grades 6-HS)
  • Health is Academic (for central office staff)

Community-based HIV/AIDS Prevention (shown to reduce sexual risk-taking behavior among youth):
  • Making Proud Choices
