Project TNT (Towards No Tobacco) - Professional Development for Teachers of Healthful Living.
Middle school teachers of Healthful Living Education in Burke, Caldwell, and Catawba counties are invited to a workshop in an evidence-based program: Project TNT (Towards No tobacco). Teachers will receive 0.6 CEUs in health education, a curriculum valued at $45, and the workshop at no cost. Snacks and lunch are provided on site.
The curriculum is aligned with tobacco prevention objectives in the NC Standard Course of Study in Healthful Living Education and has been shown to reduce smoking and the use of spit tobacco. A variety of instructional methods are used to help youth cope with media images and social pressures as well as understand the physical consequences of tobacco use.

Parents Matter Facilitator Training:
Parents Matter! is an evidence‐based prevention program for parents of pre‐teens (9‐12). This community‐level family prevention program is designed to enhance protective practices and promote parent‐child discussions about sexuality and sexual risk reduction.
• Parents need to be aware of the risks associated with sexual activity and the
importance of addressing sexual risk reduction with their children at an early age.
• Parents’ roles are critical in helping their children understand the dangers of sexual
risk taking.
• Parents need to be supported in their efforts to build strong and positive relationships with their children so they may encourage discussions about issues like sexuality.
• This program will help parents obtain the knowledge, skills, comfort, and confidence to engage their children in meaningful, sensitive, and timely discussions about sex before they reach their teenage years. If you are interested in becoming a facilitator for your local community, please assess whether you can do the
following before registering.
• Attend two full days of training with your co-facilitator
• Find an agency to support snacks and incentives for parents to attend five meetings
• Implement one five-session (2-hour each) Parents Matter Program in your community within six months
• Participate in a brief evaluation of your program implementation.
The NCSHTC and the NCDPI provided a two-day training of facilitators on October 14 and 15, 2009 in Burlington. We are planning the next event and will announce a date soon. We will provide breakfast and lunch each day, facilitator manuals, certificates of completion, and lodging for the first night. Participants are responsible for travel and evening meal. Questions?
